It is a municipal comprehensive hospital, integrating medical treatment, disease prevention, teaching and scientific research. It is also a provincial model hospital, and the teaching hospital for medical institutes. There hospital has 405 beds and a current working staff of 543 persons, of which 70 boast senior professional titles and 174 intermediate professional titles. The hospital has 10 ward zones and over 50 specialist and specialized outpatient departments, equipped with an array of advanced medical equipment. The hospital has developed its own characteristics with the Department of Spinal Surgery taking the lead and followed by specialized departments of cardiovascular system, digest medicine, celoscope, liver and gall, nerve, cosmetology, urological surgery, and etc.

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine integrates traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine, and at the same time undertakes such treatments as coronary artery pyelography, plantation of permanent heart pacer, electrocardiogram biological diagnosis, ppCA and bracket placement. The self-developed Chinese herbal medicine for treatment of cardiovascular diseases, which is named Huazheng Injectio, won the municipal award for brilliant scientific achievement.

Department of Spinal Surgery performs various spondylopathy operations. The new techniques such as emergency operation for treatment of spondylopathy marrow damage and application of fuse between spondylopathy and lumbar were listed on the key medical development program of Ningbo in 1998. Department of Cosmetology is a key specialized department of the hospital, undertaking various plastic surgeries. Department of Celoscope Surgery made a precedence in Zhejiang Province in 1992 by performing gall resection operations under celoscope. So far 2,000 such operations have been performed. Also performed under celoscope in recent years, are appendectomy, lienectomy, various urological and gynecological surgeries, and etc.

In recent years, eight scientific achievements by the hospital passed the municipal appraisal, two were awarded by the municipality for scientific progress, and one was awarded by the province for brilliant medical research achievement. In accordance with urban medical development plan of Ningbo, the hospital is to further expand in size. Currently under construction is the Clinic Science and Teaching Building and its supporting facilities, upon completion of which the hospital beds will total over 500 in number.
